No one really cares, for that matter, even knows Sherpa exist. We figured that people in Nepal don't even have running water, so how on earth would they have a TV, making it pointless to give them notoriety. The Brits, Americans, and people of Europe are super hot, film-worthy, and make us tons of money so we inflate their stories and make it juicy for the public. Until now, no one needed to know that the Sherpa simply carried the Westerners up the mountains. The other important thing to note here is that we paid the Sherpa well considering their circumstances. Each Sherpa would make at least $200 a year as well as receiving a bag of Lipton Ice Tea for a job well done. That is nearly 140% of the annual income in the country!
The people of Nepal were pleased today when they were informed that they would finally be recognized for their achievements on the many 8000+ meter peaks that are commonly climbed in the country.
Purba Sierengy, a guide on Everest offered the following statement when the announcement was made:
This is certainly a good day for the people of Nepal!
