RIO - The Olympic Committee has just approved a new swimming sport to debut at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The new sport is called Durf Diving. Durf Diving is a new kind of diving that has a scoring system that differs greatly from normal diving. In normal diving, the athlete wants the smoothest routine, and smallest splash. Durf Diving is mostly the opposite. The athlete wants the loudest "Durf" (generally an annoying grunt/yell sound) and biggest splash. Splash displacement is best achieved by landing as square on the back as possible. This is generally considered a very painful experience, but the Olympics bring world-class competitors who are highly trained to handle the otherwise painful diving practice known as "Belly-Flopping" or "Back-Flopping". Durf Diving first hit the scene in the early 1900's in Romania. It became the national sport that was quietly adopted by Russia. Russia, as with most things, took children from their parents early in life and trained them to be the best Durf Divers. Because the sport was unknown to the international community Durf Diving was a way for Russia to settle internal disputes between rival towns. After excessive notoriety and major events crossed Russia, the sport was picked up by China. From China, North Korea adopted the sport. Closed events have been taking place for centuries among the Euro-Asiatic Communist countries. An American spy was attending a Chinese Durf Diving event in China in 2010 and fell in love with the sport. When he reported back to his station in Guam, he shared the sport with the natives and the American Province fell in love with Durf Diving. Not to mention that once the sport hit the mainstream outside of the communist countries the rest of the world took hold of it and now you can find Durf Diving competitions and leagues in every continent and most major countries. Durf Diving will be scored on the following criteria in the 2016 Summer Games: - Style - 'Durfing' (a.k.a. Grunting) - Pain of flop - Sound of flop - Water displacement* *The Olympic committee has issued a mandate that Rio add precision, pool side, displacement measurement pools and high-speed cameras and measurement markers to calculate water displacement and splash heights. The main competitors and rivals at this point appear to be: - China v. Russia - Guam v. Vietnam - Russia v. Ukraine The 2016 Summer Games in Rio will certainly be an exiting event with the inclusion of Durf Diving, and we can't wait to see the outcomes and rivals battle in the pool! |
